Some familiars fetch. Sha judges you, silently, while looking magnificent about it.

She’s a Great Spirit, the rarest and most powerful kind a summoner can bond with, and she looks like a cat: silver fur, violet eyes, and bioluminescent markings that shift with her mood. She can pass between solid and translucent at will, and when the moment calls for it, she grows to the size of a lion. Her voice, heard only in the mind, sounds like wind through crystal chimes. She smells, improbably, of night-blooming jasmine and starlight.

Sha was born in an ancient, separate pocket of the spirit realm and hadn’t walked the mortal world in longer than anyone can say, until she chose Vaeris Arvel in answer to a desperate prayer. Why her, out of everyone who’s ever prayed? Sha isn’t telling. “It wasn’t time yet” is about as much as anyone gets out of her.

She calls Vaeris “little priestess.” She is, without contest, the funniest thing in this entire series. Mortals do love calling things impossible, after all, right up until a cat does it.
