Humanity is dwindling. Far more girls are born than boys, and majik, the world’s magic, selects almost exclusively men, making male Arcanists a scarce, protected resource. Women become the disposable warrior caste instead.

The church-state that rules the continent answers this with the Anima system: every majik-wielding Arcanist is bonded to a female Valkyrie, a sword-and-shield guardian who exists to keep him alive. Guardians graduate from a mountaintop academy and are bid on at a formal reception before a priest seals the pair in a covenant bond, a soul-link that lets partners sense each other’s direction and emotions, and, with mastery, even their thoughts.

Majik itself is drawn from ley lines running deep in the earth, and cast aloud in an old command language. Every wielder carries two axes of power: an archetype (light, dark, or the forbidden nefas) and an affinity for an element, fire, water, earth, or wind. Most only ever master one.

And then there’s graphite. A rare, inert metal that nullifies majik outright. A hard off-switch, in a world where everyone else’s survival depends on power never switching off.
